Itinerary
DESCRIPTION:PARACAS - BALLESTAS ISLANDS
Paracas National Reserve: This natural reserve is located in the Province of Pisco, Department of Ica, in the middle of the coastal desert and borders with one of the world´s richest oceans. Its purpose is to protect and take care of the endangered animal species. Paracas´ National Reserve is the only protected area in Peru which contains a marine ecosystem within its boundaries. From the Port of Paracas, excursions by boat are regularly organized to the Ballestas Islands where one can have a very close look at seals, penguins of Humboldt, flamingos or "parihuanas" and sea birds.
Ballestas Islands: Very early, every day, tours on barges leave from the jetty "El Chaco", to the Ballestas Islands, offering a pleasant tourist circuit. It´s forbidden to get off the boat during the tour, but you can enjoy the show from its bow, as hundreds of sea birds occupy salient crevices and esplanades, the agile seals are playing with the waves and the aristocratic penguins of Humboldt, walk in line ´till they plunge into the
Chandelier: Also known as "Tres Cruces" (Three Crosses) or "Tridente" (Trident), the Chandelier is a design composed of a series of lines furrowed onto a rocky mountain slope and which looks like a 120 meter high chandelier. Its origin is unknown, as is that of the Nazca Lines, although it might have served as a warning for navigators, due to the contrasting white lines upon the darker colored surrounding terrain. It´s located North-east of Paracas´ Bay, between the Martín and Talpo beaches.
ICA
Huacachina´s Lagoon: It´s situated 5 km. (about 10 minutes by car) South-east of the city of Ica. The lagoon is a natural tourist attraction which offers waters with healing properties, as well as the most beautiful landscapes. It´s surrounded by high sand dunes, palm trees and old "huarangos".
Buggy and sand board experience in the desert: This expedition lasts about 2 hours and will take us through the Ica Desert. It´s a thrilling circuit which gives you adrenaline kicks on each one of its dunes. Midway along, you´ll have the chance to practice going down the dunes on sand boards. On our way back, we´ll be able to contemplate the majestuous sunset on the desert. This excursion includes sand boards, driver and guide.
NAZCA
Nazca Lines: The ancient inhabitants of the Nazca Culture have left us with a valuable archaeological heritage which consists of a huge network of lines and designs of animals and plants, situated between km. 419 and 455 of the South Pan-American Road. This network extends over an area of approximately 350 km².
The flight over the Nazca Lines is an unforgettable experience. There also is a 12 meter high watch tower from which one can see the designs of "The Hand" and "The Tree".
Cemetery of Chauchilla: This cemetery of the Inca-Chincha Culture hides real mummies dug out by grave diggers and thieves, as illegal excavations exposed them to the weather and dispersed pieces of bones, of skeletons, ancient fabrics, fragments of pottery, funerary ropes, etc, upon the desert´s sand. Twelve rectangular graves, built with large sun dried mud bricks (adobes), are exposed so that the visitors might see skeletons and mummies with their long hair (approximately 3 meters long).

Here is Luis Miranda´s live eye-witness testimony (22-07-2006):
"The Sun emerged from the mist like a golden coin out of a cup of milk. We had gone through the polar cold of Tres Cruces since 4:30 a.m. to enjoy that moment: The most impressive sunrise in the world. And it so happens that, from this high spot in the Andes, one can have a limitless panoramic view over the Amazon Basin covered by a misty "mattress", in such a way that the Sun´s apparition is generally accompanied by hallucinating visual effects provoked by the humidity in the distance.
Some say that the Sun rises dancing, others, that it appears three-fold, others still say that it emerges like an atomic mushroom and also that the sky gets dyed with the seven colors of Cusco´s banner. But, just as some remain impressed by the show, other sunrise eye-witnesses get so deceived when the fog shuts the horizon´s curtain. Fortunately, we were lucky as the stars shone clear since the early hours of the morning and so, we were able to see the circular solar combustion in the midst of a whirlpool of lava, along with about a thousand people whose vehicles had turned Ichu´s golden meadow into a gigantic parking lot in the middle of nowhere.
So, there they were applauding the miracle, imitating the rooster´s call at dawn, clicking their cameras, wrapped in blankets; travelers from all over the world, like a multitude convoked to participate in a bizarre pantheist cult. But not all of them considered themselves satisfied. They swore that they had witnessed still more amazing dawns in Tres Cruces..., that this one had merely nicked magic..., that it had just been another morning in their lives..., that in summer, weather conditions allow better clearness at dawn...
As we were frantically rubbing our frozen hands, we considered ourselves satisfied. Tres Cruces, five hours from Cusco and only two from Paucartambo, where we had gone to see Peru´s most colorful celebration, is one of these places that one keeps in his secret list of remote corners to visit and to which one gets more by chance than by own will.
To us, the Sun appeared clear and without ostentation, like an allegory to show us that what is simple can also be celestial. Here, one can imagine the emotion produced by the first Andean cults and here is the proof that Peru, without any Eastern ocean and thanks to a strategic spot on a cornice hung over the jungle, is also the Land of the Rising Sun".
ITINERARY:
1st DAY (10): Cusco - Paucartambo - Tres Cruces (Three Crosses)
We´ll leave Cusco at 8:00 a.m., in a private transportation vehicle, crossing interesting valleys and picturesque farmers´ communities. Mid-morning, we´ll visit Ninamarca´s pre-Incan tombs, known as "chullpas", to then head towards the historical Andean village of Paucartambo, where we´ll have lunch and take a walk around the village. Proceeding on our trip, we´ll go up to the Acjanacu (Akhanacu) Mountain Pass, at an altitude of 3,850 m. above sea level, to finally reach Tres Cruces, where we´ll spend the night to witness the impressive sunrise at dawn. During the months of May, June, July and August, the Sun, as it rises from the East, offers an amazing natural spectacle, in a wide variety of colors, shapes and hues which you can contemplate from Acjanacu´s natural balcony.
2nd DAY (11): Tres Cruces - Pilcopata
After our sunrise experience in Acjanacu, we´ll descend to the cloud forest, passing by several altitude levels. This is where we´ll get into the Manu National Park and with a little luck, we´ll enjoy a beautiful landscape of what will be our final destination; the lower jungle. We´ll start our way down, through the cloud forest, full of gorgeous orchids, "heliconias" and primitive ferns. There, we might perhaps sight South America´s only bear; the "ring-eyed" bear (that looks as though it wears glasses), although this is a very rare opportunity, due to its shyness and scarce number. Meanwhile going down, we´ll get off our private transportation, to take a 75 minute walk and have a chance to see the famous Cock of the Rocks (Rupícola peruviana), which is Peru´s National Bird, in its mating ritual, as well as "trogones", "quetzals", "tangaras" and many other birds and animals. At night, we´ll arrive at the village of Pilcopata, where we´ll spend the night at the "Villa El Carmen" Lodge.
Option: If the group prefers, we can go all the way down the dusty dirt road on mountain bikes.
3rd DAY (12): Swallows´ Cataracts - Lucumayo (Pilcopata)
After breakfast, we´ll get ready for a two hour walk in the Manu´s jungle, to get to the Swallows´ Cataracts and then, to Lucumayo, where we´ll have the opportunity to take hydrotherapeutic baths, and have lunch. On the way in and out, we´ll be able to observe and differentiate all kinds of non poisonous, but amazingly colorful animals. This tour will take us all day and at night, we´ll have dinner around a bonfire.
4th DAY (13): Pilcopata - Yanayaco
After a good night´s rest, we´ll have breakfast and will board our private transportation and head towards Puerto Atalaya to take a roofed river canoe (each one of us with a lifesaving jacket on) and set off to our next destination. On the way, we´ll be able to observe a great variety of birds such as herons and kingfishers, along with the vultures´ constant presence and especially that of their king; the jungle´s condor which is the most spectacular of them all. At noon, we´ll be arriving at our lodge in Yanayaco, to have lunch.
Afterwards, we´ll have a rest in hammocks and later on, we´ll get ready for a walk on the jungle´s paths. Walking in silence, we´ll have the opportunity to see monkeys and birds, as well as useful plants like the rubber tree (Hevea brasiliensis). It was this tree that attracted the rubber extracting industry, in the last years of the "Rubber Boom", at the beginning of the twentieth century. Meanwhile, we´ll be able to savor fruit like the "aguaje", "pijuayo" and "ungurave". The neo-tropical jungle is like a scientific laboratory and 25% of the pharmaceutical products come from there, but less then 1% of the jungle´s pharmacopoeia has been analyzed. Therefore, we´ll have a chance to learn something about the medicinal plants that grow in the forest.
After our walk, we´ll be heading back to the lodge to have dinner and once again, we´ll prepare ourselves for yet another 50 minute nocturnal walk to the tapirs´ "collpa" (feeding place). There, we have a 4 meter high refuge equipped with mattresses and mosquito nets. We´ll silently wait to see South America´s largest mammal eating salted clay. Finally, we´ll be going back to the lodge to dream with the jungle´s angels.
5th DAY (14): Yanayaco - Blanquillo
We´ll set off very early to the "collpa" of the green parrots and macaws. Afterwards, we´ll return to the lodge to have breakfast. Then, we´ll navigate downstream and on the way, we´ll visit native communities. Today´s destination is the Tambo Blanquillo Lodge. We´ll also visit Cocha Blanca, where there are good chances to see giant otters and after having enjoyed the landscape, we´ll head back to the lodge to have dinner.
Option: We can go on a night excursion to see the white caimans.
6th DAY (15): Blanquillo - Yanayaco
Once again, we´ll get up very early today. But, the reward consists in a spectacular experience as the red macaws come down to eat clay which is essential for their diet. Furthermore, these colorful birds will delight us with a grand show of sounds and colors. Afterwards, we´ll return to Tambo Blanquillo to gather our things and head back upstream to Yanayaco, to spend the night.
7th DAY (16): Yanayaco - Santa Rosa de Huacayra (Ayahuasca Ceremony)
Alter breakfast, we´ll navigate upstream towards Atalaya. Today, we´ll have lunch in a place where there are natural pools full of revitalizing thermal waters which spring from the earth´s entrails. As the thermal waters and food will have recharged our energies, we´ll go on upstream towards Atalaya, where we´ll transfer our gear from the boat to the bus bound to Santa Rosa Huacayra´s Machigenga tribe. There we´ll benefit from their hospitality and share their activities, such as participating in an Ayahuasca Ceremony (optional) under the natives´ supervision and going on night walks to get to know nocturnal animals, among other activities.
8th DAY (17): Santa Rosa de Huacayra - Cusco
Today and for the last time in this circuit, we´ll get up early, in order to get to San Pedro in time to catch the Cocks of the Rocks´ peak activity hour. Once there, we´ll hide in a shelter to observe the extraordinary mating ritual of this very photogenic bird. After breakfast, we´ll move on towards Cusco, to get there around 4:00 in the afternoon and at 8:00 p.m. we´ll board a night bus bound to Puno, where we´ll arrive in the early morning.

Location : Lake Titicaca and Puno.
Description:
The Department of Puno is located in the Southeastern region of Peru. Its geographic profile is shared between high mountains and plateaus. Therefore, the majority of its cities are situated in high plains of the Andean Cordillera, such as that of the Collao, on the margins of Lake Titicaca. On the other side, the Carabaya Mountain Range stands to the North and the maritime or volcanic range to the South. It borders with Madre de Dios to the North, with Tacna to the South, Bolivia to the East and with the departments of Cusco, Arequipa and Moquegua to the West.
Its capital city is Puno and is situated on the margins of Lake Titicaca, at an altitude of 3,827 m. above sea level. Juliaca, Azángaro, Huancané, Lampa and Yunguyo are among the department´s main cities.
The climate in the Andes is cold and dry, with temperatures oscillating between 5 and 13° C. and there is a rainy season that lasts four months, from beginning of December to end of March. Around the lake and on its islands, the climate is cold and more humid due to the evaporation and condensation cycle of the lake´s waters.
Lake Titicaca:
It is situated five blocks away from Puno´s Main Square. The lake plays an important part in the Andean mythology, given that, according to the legend, Manco Capaq and Mamá Ocllo; children of the Sun God (Inti), emerged from the lake´s waters and traveled all the way to the valley of Cusco (Qosqo = Navel), to found the city which later on, became the capital and strategic center of the Incan State; the Tawantinsuyu: (Tawa = Four and Suyu = Region).
Nowadays, Peru and Bolivia have a shared sovereignty over the world´s highest navigable lake (3,810 m.s.n.m.). Its waters cover an area of 8,559 km² and the lake has a maximum depth of 282 m. The average annual temperature of its waters is of 9° C. There are many islands on the lake, but the main ones are: Amantani, Taquile, Soto, Anapía and Uros (the Uros are the lake´s original population) and each one of these islands offers different attractions. The totora (cattail) is the lake´s typical aquatic weed. It grows on its margins and is used to make fire, boats, houses, floating islands, handicraft and so many other objects. It also is home for several species of ducks and other birds, as well as fish such as the carachís, inpis, suches, pejerreyes and bogas.
Lake Titicaca´s National Reserve:
This protected natural area was created in 1987, with the aim of preserving natural resources linked with the lake´s ecosystem, as well as with that of the high plateau´s bioregion (puna). It covers a total area of 36,180 hectares, of which the lake´s waters form two sectors: Puno, with 29,150 hectares and Ramis, with 7,013 hectares.
Within that natural reserve, were registered many species of birds, fish and amphibians. The birds represent the greatest number, as 60 different species have been identified, among which huallatas, gulls, keles, chullumpis, as well as lequeleques stand out and some of these are endangered species. The lake´s flora is represented by 12 varieties of aquatic plants among which the totora stands out.
Floating Islands of the Uros at 3,810 m. above sea level:
These floating islands made of accumulated layers of totora, are situated in Chucuito Bay, on the lake, five kilometers north of the city of Puno (about 20 minutes by motorized boat). The local climate there is cold and dry, but is milder due to the constant evaporation of great masses of water from the lake. Each island is inhabited by 30 to 50 people. The Uros whose language is Aymara (regional dialect considered as Peru´s third language after Spanish and Quechua), have built their houses with intertwined totora and covered them with the same material; although, some of them now have galvanized corrugated sheet roofs. Among the floating islands, that of Chulluni stands out as it is the largest. Then, other drifting or already stabilized islands bear names like "La Santa María", "El Paraiso", "La Toronipata", "La Pacha Mama" and "La Tupín".
The Uros give themselves the name of "Kotsuña" or "The Lake People". Their origins date back to a time period previous to that of the Incas and these "Lake People" still maintain their crafty fishing tradition alive; especially of suches (a species of fish that lives in the lake), as well as the custom of hunting wild birds. The men are skilled totora raft conductors and the women, expert weavers.
Amantani Island:
At thirty-six kilometers north-east of the Port of Puno (about three and a half hours by motorized boat), this island is located in front of the Capachica Peninsula, at 3,817 m.a.s.l. and has an approximate extension of 9 km². The island´s flora features shrubs such as muña, kantuta, sage, tola, patamuña, etc. Eight communities live there and dedicate themselves to cultivating potatoes, corn, oca, quinua, broad beans and peas. Among Amantani´s most important attractions, stand out the two natural vantage points on the island´s culminating spot, from which one can contemplate the lake, as well as the pre-Columbian remains of the Pacha Tata and Pacha Mama temples, the Incachincana, Inca Tihana (seat made of stone) and finally, the mummies´ cemetery.
Taquile Island:
This other island is situated thirty-five kilometers east of the city of Puno (between three and three and a half hours by motorized boat) and is located in Chucuito Bay which is delimited by the Capachica and Chucuito Peninsulas. Its extension is of 6 km², with a maximum length of 5.5 km. and an average width of 1.5 km. The altitude between its port and the village slightly varies from 3,810 to 3,950 m. respectively. Maximum temperatures on the island can reach 19° C (66.2° F) and drop down to 3° C (37.4° F).
18th DAY: Puno - Uros Islands - Amantani

At 8:00 a.m., we´ll part from the Port of Puno on a three hour motorboat trip to Amantani, where we´ll settle in local houses and share lunch with the native islanders. Afterwards, we´ll take a walk to visit the Andean Temple of Pachacata and in the evening, we´ll participate in a family celebration with the locals, as we´ll enjoy dinner with traditional music and chants. Finally, we´ll spend the night at our hosts´ house.
